17,500 m³ Agricultural E-commerce Cold Storage Project in Siyang County, Jiangsu, China - China cold storage solution provider

17,500 m³ Agricultural E-commerce Cold Storage Project in Siyang County, Jiangsu, China

Project Overview and Client Objectives

This cold storage project is located in Siyang County, Jiangsu Province, within the National Demonstration Park for Integrated Rural Industry Development. The park focuses on industrialized edible mushroom production and aims to build a modern agricultural ecosystem integrating production, processing, logistics, e-commerce, and rural income growth.

With the rapid expansion of agricultural e-commerce, the client urgently needed a large-scale, standardized cold chain logistics hub to solve three core problems:

  • Insufficient cold storage capacity for bulk agricultural products
  • Inefficient sorting and dispatch during peak e-commerce order periods
  • High operational pressure to balance temperature stability and energy cost

HAOCOOL was commissioned to deliver a multi-temperature cold storage and logistics solution that supports frozen storage, ambient handling, and fast e-commerce turnover.

Project Scale, Timeline, and Delivery Efficiency

  • Total storage volume: approx. 17,500 cubic meters
  • Contract signing: May 2024
  • Equipment preparation: 15 calendar days
  • On-site construction: 68 calendar days
  • Total project delivery time: less than 3 months

The project was completed on schedule, ensuring the cold storage facility was ready ahead of the agricultural harvest and e-commerce sales season.

Storage Capacity and Temperature Zoning

How Much Agricultural Product Can Be Stored

Based on standard cold storage density for agricultural products:

  • Estimated storage capacity:
    3,200–3,800 tons of produce
(depending on product type, palletization, and turnover rate)

This capacity provides sufficient buffer for large-scale mushroom storage and multi-category agricultural products.

Multi-Temperature Cold Storage Design

To meet full supply chain requirements, the facility was divided into multiple temperature zones:

  • Frozen storage rooms:
8 cold rooms at −25°C to −20°C, designed for long-term frozen storage of mushrooms and agricultural products
  • Controlled ambient rooms:
2 rooms maintained at 15°C, serving loading docks, sorting zones, and temporary holding areas

This configuration enables seamless transition from storage → sorting → dispatch.

Refrigeration System and Energy-Saving Strategy

HAOCOOL designed the refrigeration system with a strong focus on reliability and operating cost control.

Key Refrigeration Equipment

  • 3# building frozen storage:
Hanbell twin-screw parallel compressor unit with evaporative condenser, suitable for continuous high-load operation
  • 3# building dock & sorting area:
Hanbell dual-screw parallel unit for precise medium-temperature control
  • 1# building frozen storage:
Hanbell triple-screw parallel compressor system for large-volume frozen warehousing
  • 1# building dock:
Copeland air-cooled packaged unit for localized cooling with lower energy consumption

Power Consumption Performance

Under normal operating conditions:

  • Average system power load: approx. 180–220 kW
  • Estimated daily electricity consumption: 4,200–5,300 kWh
  • Optimized compressor staging and temperature zoning reduce unnecessary energy waste

Compared with traditional single-zone cold storage layouts, the project achieves 15–18% annual energy savings.

Investment & ROI Summary

From an investment perspective, this 17,500 m³ agricultural e-commerce cold storage facility represents a balanced solution between upfront construction cost and long-term operational efficiency.

Estimated Project Investment

Based on system configuration, refrigeration capacity, and multi-temperature zoning:

  • Total construction investment: approx. USD 1.3 – 1.5 million
  • Cost components include:
  • Insulated panels and cold room structure
  • Screw compressor refrigeration systems
  • Electrical control, dock insulation, and logistics interfaces
  • Installation, commissioning, and testing

The use of parallel screw compressor systems and evaporative condensing technology helped optimize both initial investment and lifecycle cost.

Storage Revenue Potential

With an effective storage capacity of 3,200–3,800 tons:

  • Average cold storage service fee: USD 8–12 / ton / month
  • Estimated annual storage revenue:
    USD 300,000 – 450,000, excluding sorting and value-added services

For e-commerce peak seasons, short-term turnover and higher utilization rates can further increase revenue.

Operating Cost and Energy Efficiency

  • Average daily electricity consumption: 4,200–5,300 kWh
  • Estimated annual electricity cost: USD 180,000 – 220,000
  • Energy-efficient zoning and compressor staging reduce energy waste by 15–18% compared to traditional single-zone cold storage designs

Estimated Payback Period

Considering storage fees, logistics service income, and stable utilization:

  • Estimated ROI payback period: 5–7 years
