A blast freezer cold room is mainly used in food processing plants, seafood factories, meat processors, and frozen food bases. Unlike normal cold storage, blast freezers are designed for rapid freezing, typically operating at –30°C to –35°C, allowing products to pass through the ice crystal formation zone as quickly as possible.
Because of the very low temperature, high freezing capacity, and short freezing time requirements, blast freezer cold rooms are among the most expensive cold storage systems to build.

Why Is Blast Freezer Construction More Expensive?
Compared with standard frozen warehouses, blast freezers require:
- Ultra-low-temperature refrigeration systems
- High air velocity evaporators
- Thick insulation (150–200 mm PU panels)
- Large compressor capacity for short freezing cycles
The shorter the freezing time, the lower the core temperature, and the higher the daily freezing tonnage, the higher the total investment cost.

Blast Freezer Cost & Capacity Table
| Size | Estimated Investment | Total Volume | Freezing / Storage Capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 m² | USD 21,000 – 28,000 | ~200 m³ | 40–50 tons |
| 100 m² | USD 42,000 – 56,000 | ~400 m³ | 80–100 tons |
| 200 m² | USD 85,000 – 113,000 | ~800 m³ | 160–200 tons |
Capacity calculation is based on frozen food density of 200–250 kg/m³ and normal airflow spacing.
How Much Product Can a Blast Freezer Handle Per Day?
Blast freezers are often sized by daily freezing throughput, not just static storage.
Typical performance:
- 50 m² blast freezer: 5–8 tons/day
- 100 m² blast freezer: 10–15 tons/day
- 200 m² blast freezer: 20–30 tons/day
This makes blast freezers ideal for processing lines with continuous output, such as seafood, poultry, meat, dumplings, and ready-to-eat foods.
