Cold Storage Floor Construction Plan and Process Guide - China cold storage solution provider

Cold Storage Floor Construction Plan and Process Guide

When building a cold storage facility, one of the first considerations is the floor construction. For users who do not yet have a warehouse building and plan to construct a cold room on open land, the floor is the foundation of the entire project.

A cold storage floor must be carefully designed with insulation, waterproofing, vapor barriers, and reinforcement to ensure long-term durability and efficiency. Different types of cold rooms (freezer, chiller, or controlled-atmosphere storage) may require slightly different approaches.

Below is a step-by-step guide to the cold storage floor construction process:

🔹 1. Design Plan

Develop a detailed floor construction plan based on the cold room’s design requirements. This includes material selection, construction methods, and technical specifications.

🔹 2. Site Survey & Positioning

Accurately mark dimensions, floor height, slope, and load-bearing requirements according to architectural drawings. On-site surveys confirm elevation, beam and column sizes, and installation points.

🔹 3. Material Preparation

Prepare essential materials, such as XPS insulation boards, vapor barriers, waterproof layers, cement, sand, gravel, steel reinforcement, moisture-proof materials, and concrete.

🔹 4. Equipment & Tools

Key construction tools include leveling instruments, trowels, brushes, measuring tools, concrete mixers, and pumps.

🔹 5. Skilled Workforce

Ensure construction workers are trained and certified to perform cold storage floor installation safely and efficiently.

🔹 6. Site Cleaning & Groundwork

Level and compact the ground to create a stable base. Excavation (10–15 cm deep) may be required depending on cold room type. Ensure the surface is clean, free of debris, oil, and standing water.

🔹 7. Moisture-Proof Layer

Install a vapor barrier or waterproof membrane to prevent ground moisture from seeping into the floor structure.

🔹 8. Insulation Layer

Apply insulation (commonly XPS foam boards) over the vapor barrier to minimize energy loss and maintain stable internal temperatures.

🔹 9. Anti-Slip Treatment

For safety, the cold storage floor must be slip-resistant. Materials such as ceramic tiles, epoxy coatings, or anti-slip flooring are commonly used.

🔹 10. Strength Reinforcement

Reinforce the floor with a wear-resistant layer or concrete strengthening layer to ensure durability, compressive strength, and heavy load resistance.

🔹 11. Final Surface Treatment

For a professional finish, apply epoxy self-leveling floor coating. This results in a smooth, durable, and easy-to-clean surface, improving both functionality and appearance.

By following professional construction procedures, cold storage floors can achieve both structural reliability and operational efficiency, which are critical for food, pharmaceutical, and industrial cold chain applications.
