Pear Cold Storage Guide: Long-Term Preservation with CA Cold Rooms

Pears are among the most common fruits in daily life. Known for their cooling and detoxifying effects, as well as relieving coughs, pears are highly favored worldwide. However, due to their high water content, pears are difficult to store for long periods under normal conditions. The most effective method is using a Controlled Atmosphere (CA) cold storage facility. A CA cold room extends the storage life of pears and helps maintain their juiciness and freshness.

How to Store Pears in CA Cold Storage

1.Sorting & Selection
Only high-quality pears should be stored. Choose clean, fresh fruits without mechanical damage, pest marks, or visible fungal/bacterial infections.

2.Temperature Control
The ideal storage temperature is -1°C to +2°C (30°F to 35°F).

  • If the temperature is too high, pears ripen and decay faster.
  • If the temperature is too low, cold injury can occur.
Maintaining stable temperatures is critical to preventing quality loss.

3.Humidity Control
Pears lose water through skin pores after harvest. Excessive dehydration causes shriveling, affecting both appearance and taste.

  • The ideal relative humidity is 90%–95%.
  • If pears lose too much water during storage, sprinkling water on the cold room floor can help maintain freshness.

4.Atmosphere Control
In CA storage, oxygen levels are reduced, and CO₂ levels are increased to slow respiration and aging. Staff should only enter with protective equipment or after ventilating the room to restore safe oxygen levels.

5.Preservation Time
Under proper CA cold storage conditions, pears can be preserved for up to 3 month with good freshness and reduced spoilage rates.

Recommended Storage Conditions for Pear Varieties

Ya Pear: Stepwise cooling required. Start at 10°C, then gradually reduce by 1°C every 2–3 days until reaching 0.5°C. Relative humidity: ≥90%.

Chi Pear: 0–1°C, relative humidity ~95%.

Snow Pear: 0–1°C, 90–95% humidity.

Qiubai Pear: Around 0°C, ≥90% humidity.

Su Pear: 1–5°C, not below 0°C; 90% humidity.

Ba Pear: Around 0°C, 90–95% humidity.
