Hami melon is a popular fruit that can be found everywhere—from supermarkets to street vendors. However, after harvesting, Hami melons are prone to spoilage if not stored under proper conditions. Normally, during its peak harvest season in May and June—when the weather is hot and humid—Hami melon can only last about one week under room temperature storage. This makes cold storage essential to extend its shelf life.
Why Use Controlled Atmosphere (CA) Cold Storage for Hami Melon?
A Controlled Atmosphere (CA) cold room adjusts storage temperature, humidity, oxygen, and carbon dioxide levels inside the chamber. By creating a low-oxygen environment suitable for fruit and vegetable storage, it significantly slows down respiration and aging, effectively extending the shelf life of Hami melons.
Recommended Storage Conditions for Hami Melon
To achieve long-term storage without compromising fruit quality, the following conditions are recommended:
- Temperature: Maintain 3–4℃ consistently.
- Oxygen concentration: 3%–5%.
- Carbon dioxide concentration: 0%–2%.
- Relative humidity: Around 80%.
Maintaining proper humidity is critical—if the environment is too dry, Hami melons may develop dry stems, lose freshness, and age faster.
Under well-controlled CA cold storage conditions, the storage life of Hami melons can be extended up to 5–6 months.
