Project Overview: A GSP & GMP-Compliant Cold Chain for Veterinary Medicines
Inner Mongolia United Animal Health Products Co., Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of The United Laboratories International Holdings Limited (03933.HK), is a high-end veterinary pharmaceutical enterprise specializing in R&D, production, sales, technology, and service. The company has passed the national new version of GMP certification. To safeguard its temperature-sensitive veterinary biologics and medicines, the company required a modern, fully compliant storage facility. This project involved the design and construction of a 1,000 cubic meter pharmaceutical cool storage (two independent rooms) strictly adhering to China’s Good Supply Practice (GSP) and GMP standards.
The Core Problem Solved: Eliminating Temperature-Related Drug Risks
The Challenge: Before this facility, the client faced risks typical of standard warehouses—temperature fluctuations could degrade expensive veterinary medicines, leading to potential product recalls, regulatory non-compliance, and financial losses.
The Solution: Our engineered facility provides a 2-8°C (35.6-46.4°F) environment with:
- Redundant “N+1” refrigeration system (Copeland scroll compressors): One active, one standby. If the primary unit fails, the backup automatically takes over.
- 100mm polyurethane insulated panels (B1 fire-rated) for excellent thermal stability.
- 24/7 automated monitoring with multi-level alarms (SMS, audible, visual) and full data logging for audit trails.
Tangible Results: Capacity, Timeline & Efficiency
This facility directly addressed the client’s operational and compliance needs. Below are the key metrics based on standard engineering benchmarks:
| Metric | Value / Estimate |
|---|---|
| Total Storage Volume | 1,000 m³ (two independent rooms) |
| Effective Storage Capacity* | Approximately 166 – 220 metric tons of veterinary pharmaceuticals (based on 4.5-6 m³ per ton). |
| Construction Timeline | 60 – 75 days (from design to commissioning, including performance qualification). |
| Daily Energy Consumption | Estimated 180 – 250 kWh per day (using high-efficiency Copeland scroll compressors with automatic standby switching; actual usage depends on ambient temperature and door openings). |
| Temperature Stability | Maintained within ±0.5°C of setpoint, fully GSP & GMP compliant. |
| System Reliability | 99.9%+ uptime guaranteed by the redundant compressor design. |
How This Project Solved the Client’s Key Business Challenges
1. Eliminated Risk of Drug Spoilage
The precise 2-8°C environment ensures that every vial of temperature-sensitive vaccine or API remains fully potent. This directly protects the company’s reputation and avoids costly product destruction.
2. Achieved Full GSP Compliance
The integrated monitoring system records all temperature and humidity data, which can be retrieved for regulatory audits. The facility passed the performance qualification (PQ) validation on the first attempt.
3. Enabled Business Scalability
With a centralized, reliable cold storage hub, United Animal Health can now confidently expand its product lines and serve more customers without worrying about storage constraints or quality deviations.
4. Reduced Long-Term Operating Costs
The high-efficiency scroll compressors and premium insulation significantly lower energy consumption compared to conventional systems. The automated controls also reduce manual intervention, saving labor costs.
