But that’s just an estimate. The real price depends on several factors, which I’ll explain below.
Why -18°C?
At -18°C (0°F), most frozen foods – meat, poultry, seafood, ice cream – stay safe and good for months. Bacteria stop growing, and the quality is preserved. For a business in Nigeria’s warm climate, a reliable -18°C freezer is essential.
Factors That Affect the Cost of a 100m² -18°C Freezer
1. Location in Nigeria
Where you build matters. Lagos, Abuja, Kano, or Port Harcourt – each has different labour rates, transport costs, and access to equipment. Remote areas add shipping fees. Also, local climate (humidity, ambient temperature) affects the size of the refrigeration system needed.
2. Insulation Panel Thickness
For -18°C, the standard panel thickness is 120mm to 150mm of polyurethane. Thicker panels cost more upfront but save electricity – especially important in Nigeria where power can be expensive. If you use cheap, thin panels, your freezer will run constantly and your electricity bill will be high.
3. Refrigeration Equipment Size
A 100m² freezer needs a properly sized condensing unit. A too‑small unit will never reach -18°C on hot days. A too‑large unit costs more and short‑cycles. The right size depends on:
- Ceiling height (volume, not just floor area)
- Ambient temperature (Nigeria’s hot climate)
- How often the door is opened
- How much product is loaded at once
4. Brand of Refrigeration Equipment

5. Number of Compartments
One single 100m² room is cheaper than two 50m² rooms. But if you want to store different products at slightly different temperatures (e.g., meat vs. ice cream), or if you want to open only one small door at a time, multiple compartments make sense. Each extra compartment adds cost for extra panels, doors, and refrigeration controls.
Other Practical Considerations in Nigeria
- Power supply: The grid is not always stable. You need a diesel or gas generator sized to run the freezer. A 100m² -18°C freezer typically needs a 20–30 kVA generator. Don’t skip this.
- Voltage stabiliser: Fluctuations damage compressors. A good stabiliser is mandatory.
- Spare parts: Keep a spare contactor, fan motor, and refrigerant on hand. Local suppliers in Lagos and Abuja stock common parts, but not always.
