How to Store Xinjiang Apricots? Cold Storage Preservation Technology for Apricots

Xinjiang apricots are typically harvested in summer. Under room temperature conditions, they are highly perishable and have a short shelf life. Cold storage can effectively extend their storage period while preserving their color, taste, and nutritional value. In this article, we will introduce the cold storage preservation technology and step-by-step guidelines for storing Xinjiang apricots.

Steps for Storing Apricots in Cold Storage

1.Fruit Selection
Before storing, apricots must be carefully inspected according to quality standards. Those with mechanical damage or signs of disease should be rejected. Only apricots that meet the quality requirements are suitable for cold storage.

2.Moisture Control
The moisture content of apricots directly affects their physiological activity and storage safety. Therefore, controlling moisture is critical for successful preservation. Before storage, apricots must be thoroughly dried to reduce moisture content to below 5%. Pack them only after drying, as storing apricots with high moisture content can easily lead to mold and spoilage.

3.Pest and Disease Management
In summer, apricots are susceptible to various pests and diseases. Cold storage managers should conduct regular inspections (approximately every 10 days) and take immediate action if any issues are detected.

4.Temperature and Humidity Settings
The optimal storage temperature for apricots is between 8°C and 15°C, with a relative humidity of 55%–70%. For those without access to cold storage, it is essential to monitor warehouse humidity levels closely. Humidity fluctuations are influenced by both environmental conditions and the moisture exchange of the stored apricots. In poorly ventilated or enclosed spaces, humidity often varies with temperature and is also affected by the moisture content of the apricots and the moisture-proof properties of the storage facility. If humidity exceeds 70%, dehumidification measures must be taken promptly.

5.Storage Stacking Method
Apricots should be stacked rationally based on the cold storage capacity, storage duration, and shipment schedule. Follow the “Five Separations” principle:

  • Separate by variety
  • Separate by quality (good vs. defective)
  • Separate by harvest time (new vs. old)
  • Separate by pest infestation (infested vs. pest-free)
  • Separate by moisture content (dry vs. moist)
To ensure sufficient cooling efficiency, do not exceed 50% of the storage capacity during initial loading.
