Project Overview
Signed in 2025, this slaughterhouse cold storage project is located in Zhanasemei District, Abay Region, Kazakhstan. It is a large-scale multi-temperature cold storage built to support the local beef and horse meat slaughter & processing industrial chain.
Covering a building area of about 3,800 ㎡ with a total volume of 19,449 m³, the cold storage system fully covers the whole workflow: quick freezing, low-temperature frozen storage, meat cold temporary storage, packaging & processing, finished product delivery, by-product handling and waste temporary storage.
The refrigeration system adopts R507A screw compressor units with electric defrosting system and centralized monitoring & control system. The whole solution is customized to adapt to the harsh winters in Central Asia and the 24/7 continuous production mode of slaughter plants.
Note: 3,800 ㎡ building area and 19,449 m³ total volume only refer to building space. Storage tonnage cannot be directly calculated from volume. Actual meat storage capacity depends on meat form, hanging or racking storage method, aisle layout and loading process. For slaughter projects, we need to confirm production parameters first to calculate cold storage capacity and match business requirements.
Core Pain Points Before Construction
Before building this multi-temperature cold storage, the client encountered multiple bottlenecks restricting slaughter output:
1. The original simple cold house had mixed zones. Quick freezing and finished product storage were not separated, resulting in unstable frozen meat quality.
2. Central Asia features cold winters and large day-night temperature swings in summer. The old equipment lacked redundant design for local climate, leading to high failure rates under continuous production.
3. There were no independent low-temperature storage areas for by-products and waste, making it hard to meet local food hygiene regulations.
4. No centralized monitoring system. All cold rooms relied on manual temperature inspection, which raised labor cost and failed to send early warnings for over-temperature faults.
5. No one-stop solution for spare parts supply, on-site commissioning and staff training for overseas projects. The client worried about insufficient after-sales maintenance support.
Multi-temperature Zoning: Fully Adapted to Slaughter Production Workflow
The project divides independent cold zones according to slaughter procedures. Each zone serves a clear process to realize a complete loop: slaughter → freezing → storage → packaging → delivery.
| Zone | Design Temperature | Main Function |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Freezing Room | -30℃ | Rapid freezing for fresh beef & horse meat to reduce core temperature |
| Frozen Storage Room | -18℃ | Long-term storage of finished frozen meat |
| Chilled Buffer Storage | 0~4℃ | Short-term temporary storage of raw meat pending processing |
| Processing Room | 10~12℃ | Sorting & handling operations after slaughter |
| Packaging Workshop | 10℃ | Meat cutting and packaging operations |
| Loading Buffer Room | 2℃ | Temporary storage before truck loading & delivery |
| By-product Processing Zone | -30℃ | Low-temperature treatment and storage of offal and by-products |
| Waste Holding Room | 10℃ | Closed temporary storage of production waste |
Note: Temperatures of processing and packaging rooms refer to working ambient temperature, not meat core temperature. Operators must strictly follow meat processing procedures and control material residence time in each link.
Process Difference Between -30℃ Quick Freezing Room and -18℃ Frozen Storage Room
Quick freezing rooms and frozen storage rooms have completely different production purposes and cannot be combined simply:
1. -30℃ Quick Freezing Room: Its core function is to remove heat from products rapidly. Freezing capacity cannot be judged only by room temperature. We need to consider daily throughput, meat block size, incoming temperature, target core temperature and allowed freezing duration. This is the most critical parameter in slaughter cold storage design.
2. -18℃ Frozen Storage Room: Designed to maintain temperature of already frozen goods. Design focuses on inventory scale, door opening frequency and cargo turnover rhythm.
In this project, quick freezing and finished storage are physically separated. Cooling loads are calculated independently, and equipment configuration matches real production load to avoid energy waste caused by over-sized units.

Full System Configuration: R507A Screw Compressor Solution
The complete set includes R507A refrigeration system, screw compressor units, air coolers, electric defrosting assemblies, liquid supply & return pipeline system, centralized monitoring and power distribution system.
– Screw compressor units bear the main cooling load and support non-stop 24/7 slaughter operation.
– Air coolers realize heat exchange inside rooms; electric defrosting prevents heavy frost buildup and maintains heat exchange efficiency.
– Centralized electrical control manages all temperature zones, with automatic temperature logging and over-limit alarm functions to cut manual inspection workload.
Note: R507A + screw compressor is selected for local working conditions in this project. This configuration is not mandatory for all overseas slaughter cold rooms. Other projects need re-selection based on local regulations, spare parts availability and after-maintenance conditions.
Operational Benefits After Commissioning
After full installation and commissioning, the cold storage solved the client’s production bottlenecks and delivered measurable improvements:
✅ Physically separated zones for quick freezing, frozen storage and processing to meet local food hygiene audit requirements.
✅ Independent low-temperature storage for by-products and waste to prevent cross-contamination risks.
✅ Central temperature monitoring + fault alert system reduces manual patrols and responds quickly to abnormal temperature rise.
✅ Split cooling load design adapts to 24-hour slaughter operation and optimizes energy consumption.
✅ Complete operator training and overseas maintenance guidelines to reduce long-term on-site maintenance difficulties.
Key Factors to Confirm Before Building Overseas Slaughter Cold Storage
For slaughter supporting cold storage in Kazakhstan and Central Asia, confirm the following critical information before scheme design to deliver matched EPC solutions:
1. Livestock type, daily slaughter & processing capacity, batch size for quick freezing and required freezing time.
2. Finished product storage cycle, cargo outbound rhythm to determine area ratio between freezing zone, storage zone and processing zone.
3. Local power supply condition, record of minimum winter temperature and maximum summer temperature.
4. Local availability of refrigerants and spare parts, plus after-service support conditions.
5. Civil building conditions on site, equipment access and construction environment.
Reminder: Do not compare quotations simply by cubic meter price. When evaluating offers, align process requirements, supply scope, cross-border transportation, on-site commissioning and operator training. Besides equipment itself, site coordination, commissioning and staff training decide whether overseas projects can be delivered successfully.
Practical Lessons & Pitfalls for Overseas Meat Slaughter Cold Storage
Based on experience from this Kazakhstan project, avoid these common mistakes when building similar overseas meat cold storage:
1. Only focus on total volume while ignoring daily quick-freezing throughput. The finished cold storage ends up with insufficient freezing capacity and becomes a production bottleneck.
2. Combine quick-freezing room and frozen storage room together, leading to mixed cooling load calculation, poor freezing efficiency.
3. Skip independent storage areas for by-products and waste, failing local food hygiene inspection.
4. Copy domestic equipment selection without considering extreme local climate, resulting in units failing to reach rated capacity under extreme hot or cold weather.
5. Only supply equipment without arranging on-site commissioning and operator training, causing difficult maintenance later.
FAQ
Q: Can -30℃ quick freezing room and -18℃ frozen storage room for slaughterhouse share one single cold room?
A: Not recommended. Quick freezing requires large instantaneous cooling capacity to freeze meat rapidly; -18℃ storage only maintains temperature of frozen goods. Combined layout reduces freezing efficiency, raises energy cost and complicates slaughter workflow management.
Q: Why cannot overseas cold storage quotations be compared simply by cubic meter rate?
A: Overseas EPC projects cover process design, equipment supply, cross-border shipping, field installation, commissioning, operator training and spare parts. Daily capacity and process requirements vary between clients. Simple volume-based price comparison often leads to mismatched solutions.
Q: What design points should be prioritized for slaughter cold storage in cold Central Asia?
A: Focus on cold-start performance of equipment under extreme low temperature, frost-resistant envelope design, stable power supply, plus full monitoring and alarm system to guarantee continuous factory operation.
