How Much Does a 50‑Ton Fruit Cold Storage Cost for a Dubai Fruit Shop?

A fruit shop owner in Dubai recently contacted us. He runs a busy shop and wants to keep his fruits fresh longer. Before, he used normal freezers and large fridges. But they don’t hold enough stock. He needs a proper cold room to store more fruits and offer better quality to his customers.

His question was simple: how much to build a 50‑ton fruit cold storage in Dubai?

After discussing his needs, we came up with a design. Let me share the details and the cost.

The Customer’s Requirement

  • Floor area: 70 m²
  • Ceiling height: 3 metres
  • Total volume: 210 m³
  • Expected storage: about 50 tons of mixed fruits (apples, oranges, berries, etc.)

Fifty tons is a good size for a medium‑sized fruit shop or small distributor. It allows him to buy in bulk when prices are low and sell gradually.

What We Proposed

For a standard fruit cold storage in Dubai’s hot climate, we specified:

  • Insulation panels: 100mm thick polyurethane double‑face steel panels. This thickness works well for 0–5°C storage.
  • Refrigeration system: One 10HP scroll compressor condensing unit (top‑discharge type). Scroll compressors are quiet and reliable – good for a shop environment.
  • Evaporators: Two DL55 series air coolers. Two units give better air distribution than one large unit, keeping temperatures even across the room.
  • Controls: Basic digital thermostat with automatic defrost.

This setup keeps the cold room at 0–5°C (32–41°F) , which suits most common fruits.

Estimated Cost in Dubai

Based on equipment, shipping to Dubai, installation, and commissioning, the total cost for this 70m² fruit cold storage is:

$28,000 – $35,000 USD

(That’s roughly 100,000–130,000 AED, depending on exchange rates.)

The price includes the insulated panels, refrigeration unit, evaporators, control panel, installation labour, and a one‑year warranty on parts. It does not include land, building structure, or electrical work from the main panel to the cold room.

Why This Design Makes Sense for Dubai

Dubai’s summer temperatures often exceed 40°C. A standard fridge or freezer runs hard and consumes a lot of electricity. A properly built cold room with 100mm polyurethane panels and a correctly sized 10HP compressor handles the heat much better. It cycles less often and keeps the inside temperature stable.

Also, fruit shops in Dubai need to store a variety of products – from berries (which like 1–2°C) to bananas (which prefer 12–14°C). A single‑room cold storage at 4°C works as a compromise. For better results, you could add a second chamber later.

What Affects the Cost?

A few factors can move the price up or down:

Factor How it changes cost
Panel thickness 120mm instead of 100mm adds 10–15% but saves energy in summer
Compressor brand European brands (Copeland, Bitzer) cost 20–25% more than good Chinese brands
Number of doors A second door for separate loading adds $1,500–2,500
Remote monitoring Adds $1,000–2,000 but lets you check temperatures from your phone

Is a 50‑Ton Cold Storage Worth It for a Dubai Fruit Shop?

Yes, for most medium to large fruit shops. With a dedicated fruit cold storage unit, you can:

  • Buy larger quantities when wholesale prices drop
  • Reduce waste – no more throwing away wilted or overripe fruits
  • Keep a steady supply of popular items even during supply gaps
  • Offer better quality than competitors who use small fridges

Most shop owners recover the $28,000–35,000 investment within 12–18 months just from reduced waste and better buying power.
